About This Property
G.W. Hill Demonstration Forest is managed by the College of Natural Resources at NC State University as a teaching, research, and demonstration laboratory for the education of our students and the benefit of the people of North Carolina. Permitted recreational use includes: Hiking, Horseback Riding, Biking, Fishing. Hunting is by club license only. Only 45 miles north of Raleigh, Hill Forest has 14 miles of forest roads and over 22 miles of forest trails considered of moderate activity. The forest also embraces 3 miles of Flat River frontage, though there is no developed access. The Flat River is one of the upper tributaries of the Neuse River. History: The Forest was founded in 1929 when Dr. Julius Hofmann, who recognized the need for a field laboratory for the then NC State College School of Forestry, met Mr. George Watts Hill (, a local philanthropist. Mr. Hill gifted the first 378 acres, and from there financed additional acquisitions that were repaid to him from timber receipts from the property. In the late 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corp of Roosevelt’s New Deal built a headquarters lodge, faculty cabin, shower house, developed the spring and dam, and built fireline and roads throughout the forest. Since the mid 1930’s, the Forestry Summer Camp (a required part of the Forest Management curriculum) has been held at Forest’s Camp Slocum. Students live on site in primitive cabins and train daily in the forest, covering such topics as mapping, timber inventory, wildlife management, silviculture, forest communities, and fire science. The Fisheries and Wildlife program joined them in the 1970s, and these students study fisheries techniques, inventory and management, mountain wildlife ecology and management, and marine fisheries. Prior to this history, a significant portion of the acreage was owned by the NC Senator Wiley Person Mangum (http://www.opendurham.org/buildings/walnut-hall-willie-p-mangum-house) . Further, the Mangum’s were well associated with Mr. John Chavis, a free African American who served in the Revolutionary War, was the first African American to earn a college degree, and who became a teacher and preacher to both black and white children (https://www.ncpedia.org/biography/chavis-john) . Both of these historical figures are laid to rest on what is now Hill Forest.
